Pinchot Dining Room Ceiling
(Grand Prize • Pocono Record Photo Contest)

I toured the newly reopened Grey Towers, the now historic national landmark that was once the summer estate of the James Pinchot family. It later became the primary residence of Gifford Pinchot, founder of the U. S. Forest Service. Grey towers is located in Milford, Pa. I was there on opening day in the fall of 2001. This historic landmark and the beautiful grounds offer so many wonderful photo opportunities. Cornelia Pinchot, Gifford Pinchot's wife, was an avid gardener and the grounds are being restored to look as much like the gardens as they were in the 1930s and 1940s. What intrigued me most was Cornelia Pinchot’s outdoor dining room where dinner guests passed food by gliding wooden bowls as they sat around a concrete table with its pool of water in the center. I took this photograph of the open wooden ceiling in the dining room at noon on September 1, 2001.
